This lesson is going to be about pronouns. There are several types of pronouns, so if you have already learned them all feel free to move on to the next lesson, but if you have some doubts stick around and I am sure you will learn something new.
A pronoun expresses a distinction of person. Pronouns substitute specific people, things, or ideas (nouns).
Examples:
John Smith > he
my house > it
the nun >
she dogs > they
There are three main categories of pronouns:
- Personal Pronouns and Adjectives
- Indefinite pronouns
- Demonstrative pronouns
Within the Personal Pronouns and Adjectives we find the following sub categories:
1 - Subjective pronouns: replace nouns that perform the action of the verb.
Example:
My brother and I go to the same school
OR
We go to the same school
2 - Objective pronouns: replace nouns that receive the action of the verb.
Example:
Grandma gave Mayra an apple
OR
Grandma gave her an apple
3 - Reflexive pronoun: use when a person (or thing) acts on himself / herself (itself).
Examples:
John cut himself
Karla and Jenni saw themselves in the mirror
4 - Possessive adjective: come before a noun and determine ownership.
Examples:
This is my house
Those are his shoes
That is their car
5 - Possessive pronoun: also determine ownership and can stand alone.
Examples:
Those shoes are mine
Whose shoes are those? mine
